The History of Black Friday

Black Friday The History of Black FridayThis has become and epic day for shoppers and retailers alike. With great deals being offered and snapped up quickly.

But where did it all begin? What is The History of Black Friday?

Where it all began.

It all began in the United States of America where they celebrate Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving as a celebration actually began as a Harvest Festival carried out by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in October 1621.

Wikipedia on Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving meal

  • Thanksgiving is a federal holiday in the United States, celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. It originated as a harvest festival. Thanksgiving has been celebrated nationally on and off since 1789, with a proclamation by George Washington after a request by Congress.
  • Thomas Jefferson chose not to observe the holiday, and its celebration was intermittent until the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, when Thanksgiving became a federal holiday in 1863, during the American Civil War. Lincoln proclaimed a national day of “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens,” to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November.
  • Under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the date was changed between 1939 and 1941 amid significant controversy. From 1942 onwards, Thanksgiving has been proclaimed by Congress as being on the fourth Thursday in November.
  • Thanksgiving is regarded as being the beginning of the fall–winter holiday season, along with Christmas and the New Year, in American culture.*

So Why Black Friday?

Originally any day dubbed as Black was because something bad had happened.

The term “Black Friday” was actually first associated with financial crisis, not sales shopping.

Two Wall Street financiers Jim Fisk and Jay Gould, together bought a significant amount of US gold in the hope of the overall price soaring and in turn being able to sell it for huge profits.

On Friday, September 24 1869, in what became referred to as “Black Friday”, the US gold market crashed and Fisk and Gould’s actions left Wall Street barons bankrupt.

So Why For Shopping?

Lady shopping

Wikipedia explains it better than I can about the term being used for shopping.

For the bigger explanation go HERE!

  • The earliest known use of “Black Friday” to refer to the day after Thanksgiving occurs in the journal, Factory Management and Maintenance, for November 1951, and again in 1952. Here it referred to the practice of workers calling in sick on the day after Thanksgiving, in order to have a four-day weekend.
  • However, this use does not appear to have caught on. Around the same time, the terms “Black Friday” and “Black Saturday” came to be used by the police in Philadelphia and Rochester to describe the crowds and traffic congestion accompanying the start of the Christmas shopping season.
  • In 1961, the city and merchants of Philadelphia attempted to improve conditions, and a public relations expert recommended rebranding the days, “Big Friday” and “Big Saturday”; but these terms were quickly forgotten.*

The Telegraph newspaper states:

  • Black Friday later became known in print, after an advertisement was published in The American Philatelist magazine in 1966. By the late 1980’s, the term was commonly known across the nation and retailers soon linked it to their post-Thanksgiving sales.
  • Today, Black Friday is the USA’s biggest shopping event of the year, when many shops cut their prices on a range of products, in order to boost profits and officially kick off the festive season.

So what about Cyber Monday?

Cyber Monday

Cyber Monday was so called because retailers in the United States noticed that the Monday after Thanksgiving was a really busy shopping day online. So it was marketed as Cyber Monday for that reason, whereas Black Friday was originally in the real world shops then later moved online.

Both also spread over to the United Kingdom in the last few years and it has become a very big event here too.

As an online seller I became aware of it before much was known about it here, in general.

And so it came about that we ended up with an entire weekend of sales for Black Friday to Cyber Monday. The retailers were and are still delighted as they make most of their profits over this weekend and the online community of sellers can’t wait for it to arrive for the same reason.

So are the Deals Real?

A good many are. Just like anything else you have to do your research. If you are hoping to buy one or more items at a good discount then check the prices out ahead of time in various selling venues. That way you know whether your deal really is a good deal.

You need to do this offline as well as online as some so called deals are cons. But the other side of the coin is that many aren’t.

What is a Good deal?

Black Friday Deals

For me, a good deal, has a chunk of money off. I don’t consider a few pounds to be a sale, let alone a good deal.

I suppose  20% is a good starter deal. Of course it does depend upon what the product is. Foe example: Apple products are rarely discounted so many would see a small discount as better than none.

I have seen and added quite a few products on other blogs of mine, with 50% and upwards discounts. Now they are definitely worth having. Look HERE and HERE!

Some of the deals were time limited and may not still be available.

I upgraded as using the old one I had was so much slower and little ones wanting to watch something on Prime got impatient, even more than I did.

Real Leather Purse RFID and NFC Blocking

Leather Purse New Black Friday Deals just for You

This is a great looking purse and as its leather should last you for years. For me that is ideal as I get used to a purse and don’t want to part with it.

This purse has RFID and NFC blocking to stop hackers stealing your card details when they stand nearby. This has been quite an issue for several years now, so much so that when I bought a new purse a few years ago I ensured it too had the blocking within it. You don’t hear as much about it now mainly due, I think in the rise of people taking steps themselves to stop it by buying, purses, cardholders and wallets with the blocking material within.

RFID means: Radio Frequency Identification.

NFC means: Near Field Communication

With 40% off its a great time to buy if you need a purse or want one as a gift.

Samsung Galaxy S10 128 GB Hybrid-SIM Android Smartphone – White (UK Version)

Samsung Galaxy S10 128 GB Hybrid-SIM

Here is another phone for you but have to say that I am struggling to find another decent deal now.  There are offers, just not as much as I expect to see off.

Now this says UK version and I have to admit that I have no idea what would be different about it. In fact, I had no idea a phone would be made for a specific market/country.

We have 22% off this particular phone, still quite a good deal, was hoping for something a bit better.

I got bored with phones when I came across a great camera deal. Most people use their phones for photos nowadays but a photographer wants a proper camera. A photographer to me is someone who takes quick photos with a phone but much prefers the quality of an actual camera most of the time.

I have to say though, that many camera phones are really good now but they still don’t take as good a photo as a proper good quality camera. They aren’t cheap of course, quality photography does come at a price but for the serious photographer, that doesn’t matter.

A good quality photograph is a joy to behold, I think most people can tell the difference.

What deals are we looking for

Black Friday

Black Friday to Cyber Monday!

I am looking for the best and most interesting deals available for you, over the Black Friday to Cyber Monday weekend.

The deals I look for and post here will be varied. I am hoping to bring you the best deals online.

There will be goods, I will be looking at Amazon as many of their deals are excellent. I will look at online courses, to see what deal’s are available. If I see an amazing deal it will be here whether I am affiliated with the company or not.

After all, finding great deals is fun and exciting. Plus with Christmas coming it’s a chance to make great savings on gifts and all things Christmas you would have bought anyway. #Result!

Wealthy Affiliate business course.

If Wealthy Affiliate have a deal this year it will definitely feature on this blog. I have heard it is usually an amazing deal. What is Wealthy Affiliate? You can read my assessment of it here and here. These are a 5 month and 6 month review written by me on what I am learning and how I am getting on.

This blog post Action Required to build a website! will tell you the reality of starting your own business. You won’t read any of the pie in the sky stuff on my blogs. I believe in being honest and telling you what the reality of building a business is. That yes, it is hard work, but a few months down the line it does get a bit easier as it all starts to fall into place.

Will it be like those videos that promise you mega earnings almost instantly for 2 hours a week? NO it won’t. This is a proper business that you build from the ground up. Once you are earning from it you will need to keep the momentum going by working at it.

Is it worth it?

For me it is. I can go and stay with my daughter twice a month and other family every month and my work goes too. I am away nearly 2 weeks out of every month to keep up with family, I couldn’t do that with a regular job.

It is a laptop lifestyle that suits me.

Laptop lifestyle

I am not sitting on a beach like those videos you see that promise much for large sums of money and deliver very little. But REALLY? Is that even practical? Sunlight on a screen, sand everywhere and that gorgeous sparkling sea! Isn’t it better to be enjoying relaxing in such a location without putting your expensive equipment at risk?

Anyway, I am hoping that there will be an offer, which I believe is usually a years premium membership at a great price. If you are thinking about something like this it is an excellent time to go for it, while it is discounted.

Check it out first.

Don’t jump into though if you haven’t done your homework first and researched it thoroughly.

Why? Because you will be making a year long commitment to work hard while still running the rest of your life and whatever else that entails. We all have commitments, many have full or part time jobs and families. This has to be fitted around all that.

The more time you can commit the better you will do and the faster you will reach your goals.

Now don’t get excited about the whole ‘faster’ bit, it will still take months at the very least. I would hate for you to jump into this and a month down the line start complaining you still haven’t earned anything.

For a start there is loads of training to get through. Think you know it all already? Trust me you don’t!

I know this for a fact because I thought it would be a doddle getting through the training because I have run an online craft business for 10 years. I thought the hardest part would be learning to build the website. It wasn’t!

Face reality.

Building it was easy following the training, then you have to make it yours! The training continues but it’s still a big learning curve. Then once you have it the way you want, you have to fill it. Legal stuff, Privacy page, Affilliate Disclaimer and a page about YOU. The first two are easy there is help with those, standard pages you adjust to your site.

What do you put on your page about you?

Not your entire life story, it will take forever. A capsule of your life and what brought you to your website and why. My first one was written, rewritten, added to and subtracted from countless times. It did help to have other members critique it so I could improve it.

Then while learning everything else you have to start filling your site with content as in blog posts.

Are you getting the picture? Yes it’s hard work.

BUT it’s building you a business for a better future. Sound good? It is good! You have training, site support and an amazing community always ready to help.

Whoever you sign up with, me or someone else, they will be there to offer encouragement when needed. They won’t do it for you or tell you how to do it. If you get stuck they will offer advice or point you in the direction of the right training or who/what will help you best.

It will be YOUR business and there are no shortcuts but help and advice in spades is always there.
